THE REDEEMED CHRISTIAN SCHOOL OF MISSIONS PASTORAL THEOLOGY
PASTORAL THEOLOGY • It is the branch of theology that deals with all that pertains to the relationship between the clergy and the people under his care. • It is also concerned about how he feeds, leads, superintend and watch over the flocks • Psalms 23 1- 4
PASTORAL THEOLOGY • Psalms 23: • TheLord is my shepherd; I shall not want. Here the pastor represents God. He is the one overseeing the affairs of the sheep, that is: the members in the place of God.
PASTORAL THEOLOGY He must be responsible for anything that happens to his members both good and bad. Shifting blame may not do his ministry any good. He must be there for the sheep come rain come shine. He is the set man!
PASTORAL THEOLOGY • Furthermore, For the sheep not to be in want, he must make sure there is provision of the right food at the right time. He must make sure the sheep are fed with balance diet. A balance Christian life orientation must be his focus. He must not focus on a particular aspect of the sheep need based on his spiritual gift(s) or ministry gift(s).
PASTORAL THEOLOGY • Any area he is lacking must be catered for with personal update and other ministers’ or workers’ involvement. If he is good in deliverance, he must not neglect other ministry such as teaching, prophetic etc. Eph 4:10-12
PASTORAL THEOLOGY • It must be noted that not just the spiritual food alone. Physical, marital, professional, academic (tutorials, career lectures), business foods must be provided via programmes, seminars, trips/visits etc. to cater for the overall wellbeing of the sheep.
PASTORAL THEOLOGY • Any shepherd that refuses to focus on these other areas will loose some of his best hands to other parishes or churches that can provide for the need of the sheep. At times some of the sheep will be malnourished thereby becoming a parasite or burden to the pastor himself.
PASTORAL THEOLOGY • EPHESIANS 4:10-12 • 10He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) • 11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; • 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: • 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
PASTORAL THEOLOGY • 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. As mentioned earlier, green pasture represent a food with all needed nutrient i.e a balanced diet. It also means making sure the environment is conducive and well ventilated.
PASTORAL THEOLOGY • In addition, the provision of water is significant to the growth of any sheep. The pastor must make sure the Holy Spirit is given the right atmosphere in his church. This will enable the work of digestion and stabilization (conviction of sin, help, comforting, lead) to take place. JOHN 16, 8-14, John 14:16-17
PASTORAL THEOLOGY • 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: • 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; • 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; • 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. • 12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. • 13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. • 14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.John 16:8-14
PASTORAL THEOLOGY • John 14:16-17 • 6And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; • 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
PASTORAL THEOLOGY • 3He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. • The work of restoration is a cumbersome and sensitive work that if not carefully handled, might be neglected or ignored.
PASTORAL THEOLOGY • It begins with discipleship(baptismal class, workers in training, SOD, Sunday school, Bible Study, etc), providing sound and knowledgeable personnel to handle the spiritual feeding of the sheep with the word of God and basic doctrines of the Bible.
PASTORAL THEOLOGY • As mentioned earlier, it involves physical, material, business, professional, academic, etc re-orientation of the sheep. Some churches organises Adult education programme, business seminars, marriage seminars and outings etc.
PASTORAL THEOLOGY • Leading in the path of righteousness involves living by examples as the lead man. • It also involves getting people involved in programmes. Giving members responsibilties to handle. The pastor must be paying close attention to how the sheep handles the programme or teaching or prayer so as to guide, correct or redirect as might be needed.
PASTORAL THEOLOGY • Note: For His name sake: All must be to please the Lord. He must lead the sheep to follow Christ and not himself. • Note: Even the Holy Spirit our guide does all things to glorify the Son..John 16:13-14
PASTORAL THEOLOGY • 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
PASTORAL THEOLOGY • When the pastor follows carefully the verse 1 to 3, his sheep will have no cause to fear during the period of challenges, temptation or crisis. • The guide, correction and discipline provided by the shepherd through the Holy Spirit will help to keep the sheep comforted in all this period
PASTORAL THEOLOGY • 5Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. • 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
PASTORAL THEOLOGY • Verses 5 and 6 talk much about the reward of being under a shepherd that is following the footstep of the master. Are you one?
