In order to earn a regular Gwinnett County high school diploma students must: • Pass all required core courses (those with a state-mandated End of Course Test) • Pass Gwinnett’s High School Gateway Writing Assessment • This is administered in the 10th grade • Pass the Georgia High School Writing Test • This is administered in the 11th grade. • Fulfill Georgia’s graduation requirements
State Graduation Requirements • Areas of study required Units • Language Arts 4 • Mathematics 4 • Science 4 • Social Studies 3 • Modern/Classical Language and/or Technical Education and/or Fine Arts 3 Health and Physical Education 1 Electives 4 Total Units (Minimum) 23
Test required for Graduation • The Georgia High School Writing Test • Administered the fall of junior year • Required to produce a composition of no more than 2 pages on an assigned topic • This assessment ensures that students who qualify for a Georgia diploma have mastered essential core academic content & skills • GCPS High School Gateway Assessment • Administered in the spring of sophomore year • Required to write 2 essays, one of a Science topic and one on a Social Studies topic • Measures students’ ability to write effectively about 9th & 10th grade Science and 10th grade Social Studies
Test required for Graduation continued…. 3. End of Course Tests (EOCT) • Students are required to participate in state mandated EOCT to earn credit for 8 designated high school courses. • These are designed to hold students statewide to the same learning standards. • The EOCT is a multiple choice test and counts for 20% of the student’s semester grade • Students are required to take EOCTs in the following 8 content areas: • Integrated Algebra/Accelerated Integrated Algebra • Integrated Geometry/Accelerated Integrated Geometry • Freshman Language Arts/ Junior American Literature • US History, Economics • Biology
How do you choose electives?Things to consider: • Post secondary goals • 4 year college/university • If so, you will need to take at least two years of a foreign language. • 2 year college or technical school • Armed Services • Apprenticeship • What do I want to be? • Doctor, Lawyer, Journalist, Scientist, Teacher, Musician, Chef, Educator, Entrepreneur, Engineer, Accountant • Take electives that you give you more exposure into these areas.
