Transmissions & Gearboxes By Michael Leicht
Mission Statement • This presentation will help teams understand what resources are available in order to help the build process along. • Disclaimer: This presentation is a tool of what gearboxes are available on the market. We do not endorse any of these companies in this presentation.
Background Information • B.S. Mechanical Engineering From Daniel Webster College in 2011 (FIRST Scholarship) • Currently work as a Project Engineer at Enviro-Clear Co. INC. in High Bridge NJ • 10 Seasons FRC experience (Team 303, 42, 2342 & 1403)
Retail Outlets • Andy Mark INC. • Innovation First: Vex Pro Series • WestCoast Products & Design LLC • BaneBots
Drive Train Basic • Drive train is a basic element of the robot that provides motion • Different styles of drive trains provide different benefits • A competitive robot starts with a well designed drive train • A drive train is made up of motor(s), transmission & wheels.
Drive Trains • Single Speed Gearboxes • Multi-Speed gearboxes • Mecanum Drive.
Andy Mark • AndyMark • ToughBox (+3 motor, & Nano) • CIMple Box
AndyMark (Cont.) • Dual Speed Transmission • 1st Gen • Super Shifter • Sonic Shifter
Single Speed • Single Speed (Single & Double Reduction)
West Coast Products • Single Speed (2 CIM or 3 CIM) • West Coast Drive Option
West Coast Products • Dual Speed- Dog Shifter • Option of Power Take Off (PTO)
Gearboxes • Another important element of a FIRST robot is the scoring device. • Gearboxes reduces the speed and increases the torque which can be used to allow joints to rotate.
AndyMark Gearboxes • Planetary Gearbox • Worm Gearbox • CIM-Sim
BaneBots Gearbox • Planetary Gearboxes (775, 550 & 395 Motors) • 35 ft-lbf Torque Limit • Reductions Range (4:1 to 256:1)
VexPro • VersaPlanetary (775, 550 & AM9015) • Reduction Range (3:1 to 100:1)
Custom Gearboxes • Challenging but rewarding to design and build a gearbox. • Plan the gearbox out and every detail(bearings, hex shafts, keyed shafts, motors, gears, & bearing plates)
Think & Plan • Features • Two speeds • Ability to change speeds • Robust VS. Light weight • Assembly time • Custom Parts VS. Off the Shelf • Concept VS. Reality
