JAINISM… origins & beliefs • Emerged in N. India in protest of orthodox Hinduism • Stresses nonviolence; • Jains are forbidden to kill any living creatures (extreme practices) • Agriculture is forbidden • Many make their livelihood through trade (one of India’s wealthiest communities)
