Why Strategic Planning • Simply put, strategic planning determines where an organization is going over the next few years, how it is going to get there, and how it will know if it got there or not.
Benefits of Strategic Planning • Defines the purpose of the organization and builds consensus on what the organization should accomplish in the future (vision). • Establishes realistic goals and objectives consistent with purpose and vision. • Ensures the most effective use of the organization’s resources by focusing on the key priorities. • Focuses the work of all organizational units on common vision and goals. • Provides a base to measure progress.
IEEE Strategic Planning - Key Terms • Core Purpose – Why the organization exists (mission). • Core Values – Essential and enduring beliefs that guide decisions and actions. • Envisioned Future - A concrete vision for the organization, to be achieved in 10-15 years. (“Big Audacious goal” – what the organization seeks to be or become; Vivid Descriptions - what conditions exist when the vision has been achieved). • Goals - Outcome-oriented statements that define success in 3-5 years, and that contribute to the achievement of the 10-15 year vision. • Objectives – Statements that help to measure incremental progress toward the goal.
IEEE Core Purpose (Mission) • IEEE’s core purpose is to foster technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.

IEEE Vision (Big Audacious Goal) • Be essential to the global technical community and to technical professionals everywhere, and be universally recognized for the contributions of technology and of technical professionals in improving global conditions.
IEEE 3-5 Year Goals • Industry and Practitioners - Industry professionals and their employers will value IEEE as a major resource to achieve success. • Education - IEEE will improve the professional competencies of students and professionals through education. • Global Advocacy - IEEE will increasingly be valued by the global community as a catalyst for a balanced dialogue on technology-related issues. • Image - The public will increasingly value the role of IEEE and technical professionals in enhancing the quality of life and the environment. • Members and Volunteers - IEEE members will increasingly find value and enjoyment through their involvement in the organization. • The Association - IEEE will operate as a model global association, with aligned purpose, energy, and infrastructure that facilitates the development and execution of coordinated strategy.

Charge to Committee • Looking for big, innovative ideas. • Find new ways of doing what we do, and also find new things to do, all of which should provide greater value to the member and greater benefit to the profession. • Can we find synergies, and build on them to create more value at equal or lower costs. Think strategically (10-15 years out) and then refine some ideas and develop 5 year plans.
Committee Goals • Provide both a long-term (10 – 15 years) and a short term (5 years) strategic plan. • Provide report for use by Region 1 and its sections and committees to plan, implement, strategies individually and collectively. • Provide training to sections to think strategically
We’ve Started the Process.. • Developed SPC roadmap • Determined best method of communication for effectiveness and within budget • Reviewed IEEE’s strategic plans and change in direction • Determined role of R1 in enhancing the region and leading in overall IEEE objectives • Now conducting a web survey to gather input • And asking for your participation today…!

Core Ideology – Who We Are • How would you describe the core purpose of Region 1? • What was it originally organized to do? • Has that changed? • What core values has Region 1 stood for over time? • What commonly held beliefs should be preserved at all costs?
Envisioned Future – Where We’re Going… • What is the single most important outcome for Region 1 to accomplish in the next 10 years if there were no obstacles to success? • What will happen differently and better, and for whom, when this outcome has been achieved by Region 1?
Focusing on 3-5 Year Goals • What are the three most important outcomes for Region 1 to have accomplished in the next 3-5 years? • What actions do we need to take to achieve these outcomes?
Region 1 Today – Positioning for Future Success • What are Region 1’s strengths today? • What are Region 1’s weaknesses today? • What are the three greatest challenges or barriers to success that are likely to face Region 1 in the next 3-5 years?
