  2. What caused the ‘New Cold War’ to happen? • The USSR’s invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 damaged the improving relations between the superpowers (détente). • The Soviets insisted that they had been invited to Afghanistan to restore order, but western nations protested that it was a straightforward invasion that could not be justified.

  3. Why did the USSR invade Afghanistan in 1979? • They were concerned about the Muslim Revolution in neighbouring Iran which could have spread to Afghanistan and Muslim areas inside the Soviet Union. • The political situation in Afghanistan was very unstable at the end of the 1970s and the Soviets wanted to maintain their influence in the area. • Afghanistan was close to the Middle East oil reserves of the western powers and the ports on the Indian Ocean. The soviets wanted to develop their interests in this area.

  4. How did the invasion of Afghanistan bring a return to Cold war tensions? • The USA did not agree to SALT II. • The USA boycotted the Moscow Olympics. • The USA stopped grain shipments to the Soviet Union and increased aid to Afghan rebels. • Relations between the USA and the USSR did not improve until Gorbachev became leader of the Soviet Union in 1985.
