Fertilization • Several million sperm released • Less than 10% make it to cervix • 1-2000 enter fallopian tube • 1-200 find egg
1 fertilizes the egg – happens in fallopian tube • Sperm releases an enzyme(acrosome) to penetrate egg covering. Inside, it loses tail and the 2 nuclei combine to form the zygote(fertilized egg with 46 chromosomes • Once a sperm enters, the egg hardens and does not allow another sperm to enter
Twins • Identical – zygote divides within 2 days • Fraternal – 2 eggs are fertilized

5 weeks - Baby • Eyes beginning to develop • Hand and foot plates forming • Head much larger than trunk • Heart begins to beat
6 weeks - Mom • May have increased sensitivity to smell • More serious morning sickness • Get lots of rest • Eat regularly • Grapes • Keep food by bed for am • Weight gain • Headaches
6 weeks - Baby • Arm and leg buds forming • Heart and liver developing • Brain activity can be monitored • Oral and nasal cavities beginning to develop
Health and nutrition • Begin taking prenatal vitamins • Drink lots of water • Keep a healthy diet • Avoid alcohol, tobacco and caffeine • Medication – pain relievers and cough medicine • Painting • Cat litter
