  2. Fungi are everywhere • There are approximately 1.5 million different species of fungi on Earth • Only about 300 of these are known to make people sick.

  3. Fungal Infections • Anyone can get a fungal infection • People breathe in or come in contact with fungal spores every day without getting sick. • People with weak immune systems are more likely to be affected.

  4. Infections that happen because a person’s immune system is weak are called opportunistic infections

  5. Weak Immune Systems • This people tend to have a weaker immune system then most, therefore are more readily infected by diseases. • People living with HIV/AIDS • Hospitalized patients • Organ transplant patients • Cancer patients • Stem cell transplant patients • People taking medication that weaken the immune system.

  6. Types of Infections • Superficial infections • Affect the skin or mucous membranes • Example • Yeast vaginitis, oral thrush, and athletes foot • Rarely lift threating • Many of these can be easily diagnosed and can be treated effectively.

  7. Systemic infections • Occurs when fungi get into the bloodstream • Generally cause more serious diseases • Unlike superficial infections, systemic fungal infections can be life-threatening

  8. Opportunistic infections • These are fungi that attack people with weakened immune systems • These can be either systemic or superficial infections

  9. Common Fungal Infections • Candida Infection • This is a yeast that is common in people • Hundreds of thousands live in our bodies • Found in the mucosal surfaces of the mouth, the gut, and the female reproductive system • Can usually be treated with antifungal drugs • These infections are opportunistic and occur when the environment in the body becomes favorable to grow and spread.

  10. This can happen when someone is being treated with antibiotics. In this case, fungi, which compete for nutrients with bacteria within the body, proliferate once the bacteria are eliminated.

Fungal Meningitis • This is an infection that causes inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. • One of the most common life-threatening opportunistic infections of HIV patients. • Infection in people is by inhalation of small fungal call that spread on air currents • The organism only survive in those with weakened immune system
