The TMN and OSS programme in EURESCOM Luc Mathan EURESCOM mathan@eurescom.de
A long time ago, CN and TN decided they must live together CN assures TN he is moving soon to a posh new address: OSI ! TN diligently starts the long journey to OSI and almost gets there In reality CN could not afford to live in such an expensive place and moved to another, cheaper, place: SNMP TN moves in with CN but dreams of OSI and is fundamentally unhappy, even after CN’s attempts to renovate SNMP After some time CN starts thinking about moving again, to a new promising address: CORBA ! TN diligently starts again the long journey to CORBA Meanwhile CN makes other plans, because he really wants to live in a lot of nice places at the same time: JAVA, DCOM, etc... ... Not an easy love story, but CN and TN stay together ! Once upon a time ...
Projects from 1991 to 1994 : Shaping TMN Projects from 1994 to 1998 : Implementing TMN Projects from 1998 onwards : Building OSS Programme history
Prague workshop Objectives Projects from 1991 to 1994 : Shaping TMN Projects from 1994 to 1998 : Implementing TMN Projects from 1998 onwards : Building OSS FINAL RESULTS FIRST RESULTS
The way we work • General assembly agrees on a project focusing on a problem to be solved, with usually a clearly identified customer • A number of member companies commit manpower to form the project consortium • Requirements are identified/collected by the project • Solutions are proposed and sometimes experimented by the project • Final results are disseminated to all member companies, and in most cases made available outside
Projects 94-98 Aim: Technically support TMN implementations in EUROPE Using OSI model and TMN concepts already standardised or stabilised Produced for inter-operator (X) mgnt interfaces : 1) Specifications 2) Prototypes implementations and field trials 3) Methodology and guidelines for spec. and implem.

(TRS + E-MOL): P414, P609 • Mostly network level mgnt • Based on GDMO, ASN.1, CMIP • DCN: X.25, ISDN, then IP

Contributed to reorganisations in all Telcos and standards bodies Complexity means time and effort on methodology TMN boundaries are moving and fuzzy (attempts to include other models than OSI) Magnitude of investments means “legacy” still there a long time but moving fast to internet based solutions Not just network mgnt, more and more emphasis to service and business mgnt N&S management today The development and multiplication of issues involving TMN and non-TMN solutions in last 10 years has had many consequences
Projects 98-beyond Aim: Technically support harmonised deployment of OSS in EUROPE Taking account of the impact two crucial factors have on N&S management : 1) Deregulation (= more regulations to observe!) 2) Technological progress (= more solutions to offer!)
Reference framework for OSS interconnection (P811) number portability and accounting across telcos TMN Evolution and SP needs (P812) other architectures (OMG, TINA, etc), distributed technologies (DPE, CORBA, Java, etc.), methodology (OMT, UML, IDL, etc.), protocols (IP, IIOP, HTTP, etc.) Managed ATM service introduction (P813) deployment of X i/f, IP-based protocols, total security OSS Interconnection products evaluation (P908) vendors and SPs, number portability, capacity ordering, carrier pre-selection Projects 98-beyond
