What will UMTS deliver? • Potentially:- • 2Mbit/s radio access • Multimedia • Virtual Home Environment • Different from GSM • Actually:- • Maybe 2Mbit/s radio access in hot-spots! • Multimedia • Virtual Home Environment • GSM/GPRS catching up!
Will FMC happen? • ETSI UMTS and 3GPP dominated by Mobile Community • Fixed Networks have vast investment in local-line plant • Growth Area: Internet traffic mainly from FIXED workstations • UMTS MUSTBE the breakthrough for FMC!!
What can EURESCOM do?? • Identify what EURECOM shareholders WANT from UMTS and FMC • Identify key areas that need influencing • Prepare and deliver strategic contributions to influence key areas • Carry out necessary studies within EURESCOM • Contribute supporting technical material from Project results
The Tough Job!! To identify what EURECOM shareholders WANT from UMTS and FMC Why? Shareholders are candid about releasing commercially sensitive information Shareholders do not always have clear visions
Time for a change!! Carry out necessary studies within EURESCOM Workprogramme content is crucial for the delivery of strategic contributions Question: Is the EURESCOM Workprogramme optimal? Answer: Maybe not!!
Improvements!! Mixture of jointly produced mature proposals and last-minute drafts submitted Proposals categorised by EURESCOM (Services, Networks, TMN etc) ‘Groups of Experts’ brought in at the 11th Hour to act like the “Spanish inquisition” Limited multi-disciplinary review of proposals
Result! EURESCOM has three relevant Projects in ’99 Since two just started and third in April….. Opportunity to ‘Fine-Tune’ their content to:- • Work on FMC & UMTS, especially IP • Contribute to the key standards areas
