What is Oedipus’s tragic flaw? • Pride (hubris) is most often seen as Oedipus’s tragic • flaw. • “Pride breeds the tyrant” (pg. 209) • There are some other arguments as to what • Oedipus’s tragic flaw is: • Some say that curiosity is his tragic flaw because it is what leads to him finding out the truth and with the truth, his destruction. • Others say that his temper is his tragic flaw because it leads him to make rash decisions.
The Great Debate • Your group will have 20 minutes to find evidence and construct an argument that your characteristic is Oedipus’s TRAGIC FLAW! • Remember! Good arguments: 1) Make a claim 2) Support that claim with specific details/ evidence! 3) Have a rebuttal (response) to other groups’ arguments that points out their argument’s flaws while also reiterating the strong points of your claim!
The Rules! • 2-3 students from each group will come in front of the class and have 4 minutes to argue your claim that your characteristic is Oedipus’s tragic flaw • While these students are presenting, the other groupsneed totake notes on flaws in their argument to address in the rebuttal • 2-3 DIFFERENT students from your group will have 3 minutes to make a rebuttal (response) to other groups’ arguments.
