6. Introducing WGU Indiana • WGU Indiana is online, competency-based and designed to increase access to higher education. For Indiana residents it becomes another public institution. • Established through a special partnership with Western Governors University. Colleges See 17 Percent Increase in Online Enrollment • 17 percent increase in online enrollment, with more than one in four students taking at least one online course in the fall of 2008, according the Sloan Consortium. • The growth rate surpassed12-percent increase last year. Dwarfs 1.2 percent growth rate seen in higher-education student population overall. • More than 4.6-million students enrolled online overall. Up from 3.9 million in previous year.

New Initiative Will Advance the Best Uses of Technology to Improve College Readiness and Completion • SEATTLE -- The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced the Next Generation Learning Challenges, a collaborative, multi-year initiative to help improve college readiness and completion in the US using eLearning technology. • The program will provide grants to innovators and organizations in order to expand the use of technology tools for students, teachers, and schools.
