  3. World War I 1914- 18 • AKA: The Great War and the War to End All Wars. • TWO GROUPS: Triple Alliance v. Triple Entente Germany, A-H, Italy v. Allies

  4. Assassination of Archduke        * Tensions were high in June 1914, when Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Bosnia. His assassination ignited Europe into war.

  5. Trench Warfare • Attrition • Gases: Chlorine and Mustard • NO Man's LAND

  6. US enters the WWI • Neutral for first 3 years of the war. • Enter War b/c: a) Unrestricted Submarine Warfare b) Zimmerman Telegram c) Wilson wanted to “make the world safe for democracy”

  8. US in the War • Passed the Selective Service Act. • America’s military resources of soldiers and war materials tipped the balance of the war and led to Germany’s defeat.   • Forced Germany to sign an armistice. (Veteran’s Day).

  11. Wilson’s 14 Points • 1)   Plan to eliminate the causes of war • 2)   Key Ideas: • a)   Self-determination • b)   Freedom of the sea • c)   League of Nations (primary objective) • d)   Mandate system

  12. Treaty of Versailles     * The French and English insisted on punishment of Germany.      * A League of Nations was created.      * National boundaries were redrawn, creating many new nations. (except Germany)

  13. League debate in United States • * Objections to U.S. foreign policy decisions made by an international organization, not by U.S. leaders. • *   Senate’s failure to approve Treaty of Versailles.

  14. Wilson’s Legacy: • 19th amendment- women’s right to vote              • 18th amendment- Prohibition
