St. Michael’s Challenge the Gap • Aim • To enable the St. Michaels PPs 15 to be highly successful learners and narrow the gap. • Objectives • Improve self confidence and motivation • Improve character skills, like persistence and ‘grit’ • Increase the social/cultural capital • Improve aspiration • Improve attainment.   6. Defining a Pupil Premium Student . Ever 6 FSM The pupil premium includes pupils recorded in the January school census who are known to have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) in any of the previous 6 years. Adopted or Looked After Children Pupils who were and are looked after by an English or Welsh local authority. Service Child Children who have parents in the armed forces are supported through the service child premium. Know the Pupil Premium Student

Pupil Premium Attainment Gap • Attainment gaps between pupils from deprived backgrounds and their more affluent peers persist through all stages of education, including entry into higher education.  • The highest early achievers from deprived backgrounds are overtaken by lower achieving children from advantaged backgrounds by age seven.  • The gap widens further during secondary education and persists into higher education.  • The likelihood of a pupil eligible for FSM achieving five or more GCSEs at A*-C including English and mathematics is significantly less than non PP pupil.  • A pupil from a non-deprived background is more than twice as likely to go on to study at university as their deprived peer.  Know the Pupil Premium Student

The Role of the Mentor - TJL • Make regular appointments • Stick to the appointments • Be prepared during the appointment (have a focus specific to your mentees) • Brief notes if necessary to provide feedback to the team • Motivate students • New effort score criteria - (explain, remind and encourage good or better effort) • Check students are being organised – writing homework in planners, homework is being complete e.g. check Sims during meetings for positive or negatives • Motivate students – raise aspirations • Directing students to appropriate staff when struggling • Talking to the students – Get to know them • If it is not working out then let the team and we will match you to a different student

English Initiative • English Ideas so far… • Enrichment trip to Highgate Cemetery to compliment the current scheme of work on Gothic Horror – introducing a practical element to descriptive writing • Lessons on ‘Debating skills’ – to develop oral literacy and confidence. Students need to be able to be able to talk in a formal way in full sentences to help develop their written skills, as well as developing their confidence. • Linda’s small group library lessons- to engage in literacy • Understand the initial plans to ‘narrow the gap’ at St Michael’s
