Growing Success The purpose of assessment and evaluation is to improve student learning.
Ontario’s teachers use assessment and evaluation practices that: • are fair, transparent and equitable • support all students • are carefully planned • are clearly explained to students and parents at the beginning of the school year • are ongoing and varied, and provide multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning • include feedback that is clear, meaningful and timely • help students to become independent learners Fundamental Principles
What’s Changed? Old Reporting System New Reporting System • 3 Provincial Report Cards • 9 Learning Skills • Progress Report (Nov.) • 2 Provincial Report Cards • 6 Learning Skills
New Timeline • Progress Report will be sent home November 18 • parent conferences will be held the evening of November 25th and during the day on November 26th • first Provincial Report Card sent home in February • final Provincial Report Card sent home in June
The Elementary Progress Report • emphasis on Learning Skills and Work Habits • a “snapshot” of what your child is DOING in his/her classroom • will contain no letter grade or marks • teachers will indicate whether a student is “Progressing Well”, “Progressing Very Well”, or “Progressing with Difficulty” in the subject areas • learning Skills will be indicated as either Needs Improvement, Satisfactory, Good, or Excellent • parent conferences on November 25th and 26th
The Learning Skills There are 6 new learning skills/work habits: Gr.1 – 12 • Responsibility • Organization • Independent Work • Collaboration • Initiative • Self-Regulation • Teachers will comment on student strengths and next steps for improvement
