  2. What is a Title 1 School and how does a school qualify for Title 1 funds? • Each year the Federal Government provides funding to schools that qualify based on the number of students receiving free and reduced lunches. Over half of the students at MCE qualify for free or reduced priced lunch. • The goal of Title 1 is to create a partnership between school and family to ensure our students reach the highest level of social and academic achievement and to overcome barriers to success.

  3. Which Students are Served in Title 1? • Like EIP and SIEP, Title 1 provides additional assistance for students who are struggling in reading and/or math. The difference is EIP and SIEP come from state funds and Title 1 comes from federal funds. • Students will be taught in small group settings during the school day by Title tutor teachers. • Parents can elect not to have their child participate. • Student participation is based on CRCT Scores, running records, an end of the year math test, and/or teacher recommendation.

  4. Benefits of Title 1 Funding • Able to hire Math and Literacy Coaches who work with teachers to improve their content knowledge and teaching practices • Able to hire tutors to work with students • Able to hire a Parent Involvement Paraprofessional who works to develop opportunities for parents and the community to become more involved in the school • Funding for parental involvement activities • Purchase technology and instructional materials • Provide coverage for teachers for Collaborative Planning • Provide a Parent Resource Room

  5. Some Requirementsof a Title 1 School • Create and implement a School Parent Compact • Create and implement a Parental Involvement Plan • Select Parent Representatives

  6. School Parent Compact • The compact describes: • How the school will provide “high quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive learning environment” • How the school and families will build a partnership to help children learn • How the school and families will communicate regularly with each other • The responsibilities and rights of families, teachers and students

  7. Parental Involvement Plan (PIP) • Parental Involvement Plan outlines the various activities and programs we will have throughout the year to support the needs of the parents and students at our school. • Our plan will describe how we will: 1. BUILD RELATIONSHIPS, 2. LINK OUR FAMILIES TO LEARNING, 3. ADDRESS DIFFERENCES, 4. SUPPORT ADVOCACY and 5. SHARE POWER

  8. Our Goal is for ALL children to succeed! What parents can do to help… • Attend student-led conferences with your child to learn about their strengths and weaknesses and to set goals for improvement • Be a part of school activities and celebrations • KNOW the area in which your child needs to improve • Make reading/writing/math/science/social studies part of your child’s home life
