Enhancing Safety Culture in Agriculture: SACURIMA COST Action

Join the SACURIMA COST Action to reduce work-related deaths and injuries in agriculture. This initiative focuses on safety, health, and welfare issues in farming across 32 countries. Workgroups identify and evaluate health and safety programs, assess farmers' attitudes, train vulnerable populations, develop monitoring tools, and disseminate results to stakeholders. Support for strong European policies, funding, reliable statistics, and long-term action plans is crucial for improving agricultural safety and health. 1. Sacurima – CA 16123 Safety Culture and Risk Management in Agriculture Helle Birk Domino, co-leader, wg 5 Lithuania, 25th of april, 2019

  2. COST ActionThis stands for; Co-operation in Science and Technology The SACURIMA COST Action focuses specifically on Safety, Health and Welfare issues in Agriculture A COST Action is organised by a range of networking tools, such as meetings, conferences, workshops, short-term scientific missions, training schools, publications and dissemination activities. Funding covers the cost of COST Action networking tools.

  3. Background for the application • Agriculture has high rates of work-related injuries, illnesses, disabilities and deaths. • Great differences exist in; reported national death, injury and illness rates, preventive programs and financial support for prevention. • Research is limited and only a few successful interventions have been found in systematic reviews. • An EU COST Action was established to focus on gaining a better understanding of safety culture and risk management as a preventive strategy in agriculture.

  4. SACURIMA - http://www.cost.eu/COST_Actions/ca/CA16123 As of May 2019: • 32 Countries • 52 Members • 27 Substitute members • 2 (+5) Observers (USA, NZ,…)

  5. Every MC meeting – everyhalfyear • Coregroup meeting • MC meeting • Workgroup work • Farm trip • MCvotes/budget/progress/ status/new meetings to be planned

  6. Kick off in Brussel, 2017

  7. Main Goal and Five Objectives: • The main goal of this COST Action is to reduce the burden of work-related deaths, injuries and illnesses in agriculture. • 32 countries have joined the SACURIMA Action. Two International Partner Countries (Australia and USA) and oneNearNeighbourCountries (Jordan)

  8. First Objective – Working Group 1 Identify and evaluate health and safety programmes and approaches on the national level. Working Group 1 will produce a comprehensive inventory of national approaches developed to improve agricultural safety and health in participating countries. Done a survey to collect data from each member Country – trying to analyze on these

  9. Second Objective - Working Group 2 Identify knowledge, attitudes, behaviours and priorities among farmers regarding safety, health and risk management. Working Group 2 will produce assessment tools and measure safety culture in agriculture, quantified as Safety Culture Index, which can be used for benchmarking national performance.

  10. Third Objective – Working Group 3 Identify effective models for training and integrating vulnerable populations (including refugees and young workers) into the agricultural workforce. Working Group 3 will investigate and evaluate measures taken in participating countries to train and integrate vulnerable populations, including refugees, in the agricultural workforce. Articles?

  11. Fourth Objective –Working Group 4 Develop means and indicators for monitoring progress and evaluating the impact of interventions on injuries and illnesses in agriculture. Working Group 4 will produce an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of existing data collection mechanisms and propose improvements on the national and European levels for effective surveillance of health, safety and risk management indicators in the agriculture sector.

  12. Fifth Objective . Working Group 5 Disseminate results to stakeholders and the agricultural community. Working Group 5 will coordinate dissemination of information to three primary target audiences: policy makers, experts and end users. Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSM), Workshops and Symposiums are used to collect data from participating countries and disseminate it to target audiences. • Made for now: • 2 videos – 2 more to come • Logo • 1 website www.sacurima.eu • 1 facebookspage www.facebook.com/sacurima • Pressrelease • Handsout – flashligtsare to beproduces – ”shine a light on ag-safety”

  13. Suggestions – We need; • Strong European Policies for agricultural safety & health applied across all member states. • Resources (funding) for research, education, development and implementation / extension, regarding ag safety & health. • Standardized and reliable statistics to develop appropriate strategies and OSH authorities with competence & focus on ag safety & health. • Policy which promotes safety & health in agriculture … if a farmer invests in ag safety & health gets higher EU funding …...or other solutions. • Action programs which work over a long period of time (>10 years) to change behaviour and attitudes with increased involvement of farmers themselves to achieve a change of mind-set. • Special attention on family farms and farming communities, ….. old farmers, extended families, children …..to ensure a sustainable and professional farming base!
