Framework Programme 7 (FP7) • EU’s main instrument for funding research, and further their goal of creating a knowledge-based economy • Runs 2007 – 2013 • Four main pillars: - Cooperation - Ideas - People - Capacities • Total funding over €50 billion
Strategy for Schools/Individuals • Consider EU funding as part of a balanced research portfolio. • Sign up for the UKRO information service • Marie Curies Actions are excellent opportunities for those inexperienced with European funding • Look at published (or leaked) Work Programmes as early as possible • Influence content of future Work Programmes toward your areas of interest • Consider European aspect to any networking activities
European Research Council • Starting Investigator Grants & Advanced Investigator Grants • to fund basic, ‘frontier’ research projects of outstanding individuals in any field • €1.5/2.5 million for 5 year project to fund team • Peer reviewed, based on the excellence of the candidate and excellence of the project
Marie Curie Actions • Comprise the ‘people’ pillar of FP7 • Predominantly pay for fellows either individually or in networks • Give excellent remuneration for fellows, plus some money for their travel, and consumables, overhead, management. • UoN very successful but there is scope for even more success.
Support • First point of contact – HSSRC (or me). • Martin Pickard; dramatic success rates in proposal writing • Liz Hooley has particular responsibility for Marie Curie actions • HSSRC handle admin, budget, and are backed-up by Jill Harris/Jenny Rowley in RIS • Post award team for the contracts and consortium agreements; Paul Cartledge • UKRO; facilities in Brussels • EMEO; also have Brussels facilities and can broker meetings with EU officials
The EU Travel Fund • Provides up to £500 (once only per project) for help in setting up a new EU project. • For Travel and Subsistence • Expectation that School/Institute matches or part-matches the funding. • More detail: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/ris/local/research-strategy-and-policy/
