WEATHER AND CLIMATE UNIT 4
VOCABULARY (SIGNS OF CLIMATE CHANGE) CHANGE: CAMBIAR DUE TO: DEBIDO A MELT: DERRETIRSE RISE: SUBIDA DECREASE: DISMINUIR CHALLENGE: DESAFÍO ABLE: CAPAZ
VOCABULARY (THE ATMOSPHERE) • INCREASE: INCREMENTO • AMOUNT: CANTIDAD • GREENHOUSE GASES: GASES DE EFECTO INVERNADERO • GLOBAL WARMING: CALENTAMIENTO GLOBAL • ATMOSPHERE: ATMÓSFERA • LAYER: CAPA • SURROUND: RODEAR • NITROGEN: NITRÓGENO • OXYGEN: OXÍGENO • TROPOSPHERE: TROPOSFERA • STRATOSPHERE: ESTRATOSFERA • MESOSPHERE: MESOSFERA • THERMOSPHERE: TERMOSFERA • EXOSPHERE: EXOSFERA
GLOBAL WARMING Future climate change and associated impacts will differ from region to region. Anticipated effects include increasing global temperatures, rising sea levels, changing precipitation, and expansion of deserts in the subtropics. Warming is expected to be greater over land (tierra) than over the oceans and greatest in the Arctic, with the continuing retreat (retirada) of glaciers, permafrost and sea ice (banquisa). Other likely (probables) changes include more frequent extreme weather events such as heat (calor) waves, droughts, heavy rainfall with floods and heavy snowfall; ocean acidification; and species extinctions due to shifting (cambiantes) temperature regimes. Effects significant to humans include the threat (amenaza) to food security from decreasing crop yields (producciónagrícola) and the abandonment of populated areas due to rising sea levels. Because the climate system has a large "inertia" and greenhouse gases will remain (se mantendrán) in the atmosphere for a long time, many of these effects will persist for not only decades or centuries, but for tens (decenas) of thousands of years to come.
Activity • What are the effects of global warming? • What will be the most affected area by global warming? • What are the most significant effects for humans? • How long will these effects persist?
