The pantheon in rome Anna Glickman
Location & purpose • The Pantheon was built in Rome between 118-125 AD. • Today, the Pantheon is still standing and almost completely in tact. • The structure was built by the Roman emperor Hadrian. • It was built as a temple to all of the gods of Pagan Rome. • Hadrian built it as a replacement to the other Pantheon which burnt down in 80 AD. • The use of the Pantheon is somewhat unknown. All we know is that it was used as a temple. • The way that Roman people worshipped in this temple is also unclear because of how differently the structure was built.
Uniqueness & structure • The most unique aspect of the building’s structure was a dome that was over 43 meters high. • This dome was the only source of light in the structure. • It took seven years to complete the building of the Pantheon. • The builders of the Pantheon used thick concrete for the walls and a thinner concrete for the dome.
Ancient foresight • Many building in modern day are based off of and inspired by ancient Roman structures. • For example, the US Capitol building was inspired by the Pantheon. • Both structures have a dome and columns. • Although it was a wonderful structure, the Pantheon was not included in one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
