CommunicationGeneral Burnside's troops reach the Rappahannock River to find that the pontoons they need to cross the river have not arrived. Poor communication and inclement weather have hampered the delivery. Burnside's men wait almost two weeks for the equipment to show up. Fredericksburg results • Confederates suffered 5,300 causualties • 12,600 Federal soldiers killed, wounded, or missing, • almost two-thirds fell in front of the stone wall • Once again Lee has defeated a Union General who has 2 – 3 times his number • Burnside resigns – taking full blame for the defeat – He is replaced by Hooker.
