Chapter 7 Review Nutrition for Life
Classes of Nutrients • Carbohydrates and fats
Classes of nutrients • Proteins and water • Minerals and vitamins
Dietary Guidelines • Are useful because they coordinate the information from several sets of recommendations
Athletes and Infants • Have different energy and nutrient needs than do most people
Heart Disease • Disease linked to high levels of saturated fat in the diet
Fats • Saturated fats - Excessive consumption is not good because of their association with atherosclerosis and heart diseases. • Unsaturated fats are considered good to eat if you are watching your cholesterol However the presence of trans fat especially in margarine makes it dangerous as trans fat can block arteries easily.
Water • Important for waste removal, temperature regulation, and maintenance of the proper environment for chemical reactions
RDA • Recommended nutrient intakes that meet the needs of most healthy people
Junk Food • Food that provides few nutrients relative to the energy it contains
Healthful snack • Nutrient-dense food choice such as an apple or yogurt
Fiber • Aids digestion and may help prevent cancer and heart disease
My Pyramid • Used to help you choose what to eat and how much to eat daily
Diet • Infants and children need more food energy per pound of body weight than adults.
Vegetarians • Must carefully plan their diets because it is challenging to get all of the essential vitamins and minerals from plant sources alone
