Today’s Lesson • The Ozone Layer • Gases Activity
Ozone • Ozone is quite an interesting thing, it’s basically three Oxygen atoms bonded together. • It’s main use is to absorb UV rays found in outer space to make life habitable. • If animals are exposed to UV rays in small amounts, we can get sun burnt. Large amounts will cause instant death.
CFC’s • Chlorofluorocarbons or CFC’s for short were used as coolant in refrigerators. They were seen as a great thing as they were unreactive, non-poisonous, non-flammable and cheap and easy to produce. • However, when released into the atmosphere they will react strongly with Ozone and they have a long life span.
CFC’s • Look at the chain reaction on Page 192 – one Chlorine atom can destroy hundreds of thousands of Ozone molecules. • As such, they were banned in the 1980’s and are one of the few world agreements that has been signed that has actually worked. • There was a large hole in the ozone layer at the poles (mainly in the south)
Hole in Ozone Layer • This hole was getting larger due to the Cl atom in CFC’s reacting with Ozone. • At the moment, the hole is getting smaller but it’s happening slowly. This is one of the main reasons why people get so sun burnt in countries such as South Africa, New Zealand, Argentina and Australia. • Questions: Read Page 192-193 and answer Q 1-5 in sentences.
Gases Are Great!! • For this exciting activity, we will be completing an A3 poster on one of the following gases: (choose one) • Nitrogen • Argon • Oxygen • Carbon Dioxide • Ozone • Sulfur Dioxide • Water Vapor
Include the following: • Who found your gas? When was it found? • Draw an electron dot diagram for your gas • Include basic information about your gas (MP, BP, Ar/Mr, amount found in atmosphere, etc) • Explain the cycle on earth for your gas (including diagram) • What is your gas used for in Industry? Explain giving examples
Continued • Is your gas need or harmful to living organisms? Explain. • How can industry get your gas in a pure form? • Does your gas cause any problems (for industry or living things)?? • Anything else of interest • A simple bibliography
