Potential Use of PEP-II Magnets by Project X Jim Kerby, Fermilab for the Project X Design Group
Project Requirements (1) • The current conceptual design of the transfer line from the 8 GeV H- linac to the Recycler injection straight section utilizes the following magnetic elements: • 72 arc dipoles • 3 required to ramp to ~500 gauss at 5 Hz for linac dump switch • 69 run DC at a field of ~500 gauss • 4 vertical dipoles at a DC field of ~500 gauss • 45 quads in arc and straight which run on F and D bus at an integrated gradient of 1.3 to 1.6T • 20 independently controlled quads with integrated gradients between 1 and 4T. • 30 -35 Horizontal correctors with maximum integrated field of ~0.017T-m • 30-35 Vertical correctors with maximum integrated field of ~ 0.009T-m • For the present configuration, Project X has two options for the transfer line magnetic elements: 1) new permanent magnets and 2) re-use PEP II HER magnets.
Project Requirements (2) • Configuration uncertainty. • For CD-1 (currently anticipated Oct. 2010) the DoE order 413.3a requires the consideration of alternative designs to meet the mission need. • This investigation could result in a lower energy linac, a new synchrotron, and multiple beam lines all yet undefined. • Depending on the siting of such a facility, the required fields and gradients could exceed the specifications for the PEP-II magnets and/or require additional LCW systems for the Al conductor magnets. • Until the Project X configuration is finalized for CD-1, i.e. linac energy and transfer line layout, FNAL cannot commit to a definite plan for procurement of PEP-II magnets.
Component Requests • Based upon the current conceptual design of the transfer line and the magnetic requirements, the following is a list of PEP-II items that could potentially fulfill the project’s requirements. • 86 HER main dipoles • 76 for the arc and vertical bend • 10 for spares • 73 HER 4Q22 quads • 65 for transport line • 8 for spares • 40 HER Horizontal correctors • 40 HER Vertical correctors • We cannot use any of the vacuum chambers • If the linac energy remains 8 GeV and the permanent magnet option is selected, Project X is still interested in 6 of the HER dipoles (3 installed + 3 spares) and the correctors.
Scheduling • We would like to complete low field measurements on a few magnets in advance of CD-1. Details of the measurements to be worked out. • We will determine the preliminary list of requested magnets by CD-1. • We will finalize the list of requested magnets by CD-2. • We will be in a position to start accepting magnets following CD-3. • The current Project X working schedule (not officially accepted by DOE at this time) shows: • CD-0 in July 2009 • CD-1 in December 2010 • CD-2 in July 2012 • CD-3 in August 2013 • the beginning of the installation task starting fall of 2016.
