Qualitative Data Analysis Prof Tony Hines
What do you want from today? • To learn how to perform/do Qualitative Data Analysis (manually and with CAQDAS) • To Know the steps to do it • To know what tools are available to help you • To learn how codes help with interpretations • To understand what you need to do as a researcher • To understand limitations and what the tools can help you with • This session will help you get started with QDA • It will get you started with NVIVO • This is not an advanced session it is an introduction to QDA
What do we mean by QDA? • Any data requires analysis to yield information • Qualitative data comes in various forms: mainly text, visual data and observations we record • We will focus mainly on text analysis • However I will show you what else is possible
Analysis • Simply means breaking data into smaller parts • In QDA we use coding to do this • Coding simply captures the meaning through interpretation • Coding requires skill whether you do it manually or by using software • The researchers code the data • You could code data using the participant’s own words – INVIVO codes. • Alternatively you could code the data - INVITRO
Benefits of coding - • Coding is the first stage of QDA • It allows you to make interpretations from your data • You can perform coding manually • Or you can use CAQDAS such as NVIVO • Today we will begin by considering what approaches we can take to coding qualitative data and then • We will code some data manually • And we will code data using NVIVO
