Editorial A frozen in time. Well, a brief and comprehensive look on several civilizations throughout history would reveal the importance of education as it applies to society including its economic growth. ‘ ‘ nation’s brilliance and ability to thrive is largely dependent upon its people’s edification. Without being open-minded and allowing oneself to be taught, a person can become stagnant, ignorant, and It is rightly said that, “Knowledge is Power”. This quote has many flexible shades of application and holds good in several frameworks. Knowledge and Education has enabled us to make all the progressions in the science and technology spheres that we have been able to achieve today. It has motivated us to be far more capable, superior and sophisticated beings. Always remember, Knowledge will give you power, but education will shape your character and character will earn you Respect. While the education during the initial years of schooling are general, some special streams of courses are pursued by children as they grow up so that they attain proficiency and skill in the field in which they want to excel and build their career. Higher education, theoretically, will also enable individuals to expand their knowledge and skills, express their thoughts clearly in speech and in writing, grasp abstract concepts and theories, and increase their understanding of the world and their community. Pursuing higher education improves an individual’s quality of life. Citizens tend to recognize the value of education, especially during times of economic turmoil, which create an environment rampant with job uncertainty. When considered as the search for enlightenment, education could be considered as a journey, or a pilgrimage. If done properly, this pursuit implicates the veracity of the whole person -- human relationships and humanity, career choices, and chief decisions throughout one’s life. Enlightenment truly involves “education” -- a leading out, a moving away from. But if we, as individuals, organizations and society, are to move forward, anticipating and answering the challenges of tomorrow is imperative. We need to look to the future not just to prepare for it, but to give it a concrete shape with the help of our education. Innovation is great in every aspect, but how do we innovate thoughtfully? What’s the right balance between speed and careful study? The answers don’t exist in any single space. We’ll only realize the full, inclusive potential of tomorrow by hurdling across old boundaries that divide disciplines, institutions and nations. We’ll evolve and improve ourselves to fit better into the real economic world only with enlightenment through methodical education with the help of competent educational institutions. Exploring the Educational Institutions in US T he higher education system of the United States of America provides an incomparable level of flexibility through a number of diverse institutions that the States encompasses. It is indeed the most attractive feature of the U.S. higher education system for scholars hailing to refine their skills from all over the world. This diversity offers students with varied options to specialize in their choice of academic disciplines and even gain employment training through their career center. More than 4,500 accredited institutions help to leverage the higher education framework in the United States. The institutions are accredited on a national or regional level by independent accrediting bodies, unlike many countries which are organized and managed by a central body. Some of the various institutions that offer higher-education degrees include liberal arts institutions, private colleges and universities, community colleges, colleges for biblical studies, law colleges etc. For example, liberal art institutions offer major/minor degree courses in the arts, humanities, languages, and social and physical sciences. The majority of liberal arts institutions are private. Private colleges and universities are funded by a combination of endowments, research grants, gifts from alumni, and tuition fees. Community colleges are another option that provides students with two-year associate degree programs for them to continue studies for an undergraduate degree along with helping them gain occupational skills for immediate employment. The United States is privileged to have some glorious multiversities basking on its terrain, which provide a plethora of courses under one roof. Public Universities, founded and subsidized by the U.S. state governments, are state colleges and universities that provide a low-cost education to residents of that state. Public universities generally offer access to research opportunities and curriculums in a wide variety of fields of study. The U.S. academic calendar typically runs from September to May and can be divided into two academic terms of 16-18 weeks known as semesters. Alternatively, some of the schools operate on a quarter or trimester system of multiple terms, each with period of 10-12 weeks. Increasing the Retention Rate to Increase the Graduation Rate T The low graduation rate has also been linked to the non-delivery of good quality education and scheduling conflicts due to which students are not able to find the right course. Today, maintaining a proper retention rate has become a prime concern for most major schools with students having many choices to opt for graduation in the country. he first query that comes to mind of any aspiring freshman is the graduation rate of the college. It has been presumed that the reason for the low graduation rate has been due to poor service experience and treatment that has been meted out by the college onto the students. As per the National Center for Education Statistics, 60% of first-time, full-time students have completed their graduation in the allotted 6 years. To be more specific, it was 58% at public institutions, 65% at private non-profit institutions, and 27% at private for-profit institutions. The variations in the graduation rates were also observed according to the institutions’ selectivity level. It was observed that the institutes that had the lowest admission acceptance rate had the highest graduation rate. Those with an open admission policy had the lowest graduation rate. As per Astin's (1984) theory, participation in extracurricular activities contributes to the success of students. Such knowledge-based workers are determined and have distinguished characteristics, •They usually work in small companies, mostly startups. •They often work on contractual basis, or as part-time workers, so they move around from one job to another fairly frequently. •They sometimes are entrepreneurs and are their own bosses; sometimes they have created their own job, which didn't exist until they worked out that there was a need and they could strive to meet that need. •They are adaptable to the digital advancements and are competent digitally; digital technology is a key component of their work contributing to the business. •There are constant changes in the nature of their work, typically based on response to market and technological developments and thus the knowledge base of their work is likely to change rapidly. •They play many roles because they often work for themselves or in small companies. So their role is diversely covering various verticals of marketing, designing, accounting, sales, managerial responsibilities, technical support, etc. •They depend on social media platforms to bring-in business and to keep their knowledge up to date with current trends in their area of work •They need to be quick learners to stay on top in their business-space, and they need to manage that learning for themselves. •Above all, they need to be flexible, to adapt to rapidly changing conditions around them. Embedding skills in the curriculum Most faculties in universities are well trained in content and have a deep understanding of their subject areas. Expertise in development of skills though, is another matter. Some of the important skills that hold an important role in an individual's overall development are communications skills, the ability to learn independently, ethics and responsibility, teamwork and flexibility, thinking skills, digital skills and knowledge management. Universities can take that into consideration and look for ways to entrench these skills into curriculum. •Development of skills is relatively context-specific. Furthermore, these skills need to be rooted within relatively particular knowledge domain. For example, problem solving in business is different from problem-solving in medicine. Student Opportunities: CCAD MindMarket gives students a chance to work on realworld projects with companies and organizations while in school, giving them the opportunity to learn and lead design processes, and providing partners the kind of unique and innovative thinking they can only get from CCAD. Students have the opportunity to work closely with professionals in their fields, and can compete against peers and professionals in events such as the FirstBuild Hackathon (Industrial Design) and the American Advertising Awards (Advertising & Graphic Design). Dr. Melanie Corn CCAD's President Dr. Melanie Corn became CCAD's President in 2016 — the first woman President in the history of CCAD (and one of only six women serving as presidents of member institutions of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design). Dr. Corn's academic and pedagogic work combines interests in contemporary visual culture and theories of gender and sexuality, and her graduate art history works are focused on the visual crisis surrounding the AIDS epidemic. She received her BA in Art History from Stanford University, her MA in Art History from University of California Santa Barbara where she also completed doctoral coursework and exams, and her EdD in Higher Education Management from University of Pennsylvania. Biology: Upon completion of the Biology degree from Edward Waters, the University Of Health Sciences Antigua School Of Medicine offers full tuition scholarships to their Biology majors for two years.
