Who we are • 5,000 CBC employees and freelancers • Dedicated • Skilled • Highly productive • Above all, loyal • 6,000 media workers across the country • Thank you for inviting us
Our approach • Inquiry-based exercise • Will public broadcasting still be essential beyond 2015? • What elements of public media will be important in 2015? • What stands in the way? • What is the strategy to ensure that the CBC survives and thrives beyond 2015?
Are we relevant? • A known source of Canadian storytelling • Contribute to citizen education and democracy • Set a standard for public broadcasting – be something to every Canadian
The “must-haves” beyond 2015 • Connecting Canadians • Local presence • Courageous newsgathering • Showcasing and developing Canadian talent • Engaged with all of Canada as it is, not just as it used to be • Exploiting technologies with a focus on optimal service to Canadians
What stands in the way? • Lack of understanding in the public about what public broadcasting brings and its mandate • Precarious funding model • Lack of arm’s-length relationship with the government • Regulatory regime under pressure – what will that mean for CBC?
Strategies for a relevant CBC beyond 2015 • Include the public in an effective, meaningful and ongoing conversation about the value of CBC • Set as a priority the demand for a sustainable funding model • Leverage our biggest strength – our people • Build on communities in everything we do • Develop bold plans for CBC to play a central role in bridging the various divides in the country • Push the CRTC to get back to its social policy purpose
Good questions • 1 • As an individual employee, team, show, station, what can you do to address the Beyond-2015 challenges? • What will you need now and over the next 5-10 years to meet these challenges? • 2 • What role (s) does the CBC play in your community? • How has this changed in the last 20 years, and what do people say about that? • How does it need to change over the next 5-10 years? • 3 • In your view, what part of CBC is best positioned to be where we need to be beyond 2015? • What other similar organization can we look to for best practices?
