Contents • A summary of the contents of the document. • Books are good examples. • Find headings of information, i.e. • Chapter number; • Sub heading title; • Paragraph headings. • Activity: use a mail order, or Argos catalogue contents to find items. • Is the contents sub-divided into categories?
Index • A list of key words in alphabetical order. • How are words put alphabetically? i.e. • Jones, John, Johnson, Jupp, Jolly, James. • James • John • Johnson • Jones • Jupp. • A directory is listed alphabetically.
Dewey Decimal System • Used in a library for books where many hundreds of books are stored in an organised way. • Use a decimal number system to categorise sets of books by genre, i.e. • 000 - 099 General works, encyclopaedia. • 100 - 199 Architecture • 200 - 249 Arts • 250 - 299 Botany
Dewey • Each category will be separated into smaller categories, i.e. • 250 - 259 Trees, • 260 - 269 Shrubs, • 270 - 279 Flowers, • etc. • And further subdivided to: • 251 - Large trees • 252 - Medium trees • etc.
Activity • Homework: • Using your local or school library choose something of interest to look up. • Ideas: sports personality, shakespere play, dickens novel, etc. • Note the Dewey numbers you came across and the different categories in finding the book.
