PPE Web Pages • Moved PPE web pages to university supported content management system • Staging website for development • (Should be) easy enough to add and modify content • Content rewrite underway • New set of ATLAS pages went live earlier this year • Now working on material for LHCb, HyperK, CLIC, ILC, FCC • Need to update more general pages e.g. Seminars, Postgraduate opportunities, Careers etc. • Discussions with school web support on best way to support dynamic content (e.g. Member lists, News items) • Volunteers and contributions very welcome
Research DataStore • Nominally 500 GB per user free at point of use for every researcher • Can share up to 50% of share with "group or project partners” • 60 days offline backup Available now for testing via an SMB share Mac: Cmd-K -> smb://csce.datastore.ed.ac.uk/csce/ph/users/$UUN Linux: mount.nfscsce.datastore.ed.ac.uk:/exports/csce/ph/users/$UUN Or via scapa: /Disk/ds-sopa-personal/$UUN • Caveats • For now think of this as a data silo rather than as a dropbox-like tool • Inconsistencies in definition of researcher - may only get 5G instead of 500G depending on your designated title • Permission management needs some work • Upcoming school meeting to determine storage space practicalities and access mechanisms
PPE Small scale Batch System • Aim to have small-scale compute resources with faster turnaround time than ECDF • For larger scale workloads continue to ECDF resources • If there is enough demand for the service will scale up the number of slots • Already some usage in the last two weeks (170 jobs) • No scheduling scheme in place – the only limit is 48 hour wallclock • Would like feedback on the best queue configuration • e.g. Does it make sense to have a short 1 hour queue?
Data Preservation • Our old storage servers are out of warranty and the data needs to be archived • This means any data on the following partitions: ardbeg5, basil3, lochnagar0, speyside4, speyside7, speyside8 • Note: This does not include data on /Disk/ecdf-nfs-ppe • Computing support recommends migrating and archiving all data from these servers to avoid any possibility of data loss • A significant proportion can (presumably) be removed without archiving (e.g ATLAS LHCb, ROOT software releases) • Lots of data from previous staff and students • Performed preliminary bookkeeping to the assess scale of exercise • Data from 33 staff and 16 students (current and former) • ROOT files / experiment-based data dominates usage • Oldest timestamp: Apr 18 1985 (eisenhar) • Will send out an targeted email to users over the coming weeks to review data to be archived
