The History of Video Games By: Conrad Cornell
The progress that has been made since the first video game in 1952 is unbelievable. • The most prominent growth of video games occurred in the 21st century specifically when the internet and online gaming came along. • Video Games are so successful because they provide great entertainment and are designed to be addicting. Overview
In 1952 A.s Douglas from the University of Cambridge in England programmed the first video game called “TicTacToe” on what was called the EDSAC vacuum-tube computer. • The second was not invented until 1958 when Willy Higginbotham programmed “Tennis for Two” on the analog Donner computer. • “SpaceWar!” was the next game to be created between 1961 and 1962 by a team based out of MIT The First, Second, and Third Video Games
“Computer Space” was the first arcade game developed in 1971 by Nolan Bushnell. • After it was not all too successful Bushnell then developed a gaming system called “Atari” that was compatible with televisions. • The “Atari” company then created another arcade game in 1973 called “Pong” that was a huge hit. Arcade games lead to Revolution
In the late 1970’s Bushnell sold Atari to Warner for 26 million dollars. • Warner was able to create the 2600 VCS which was the first in home console compatible with multiple games. • Warner then began to market the wildly successful “Pong” game as an in home video game on their new console. • They sold six million consoles by 1980. Selling of Atari… more PONG
For a while Warner was running away with the video game market until Namco released Pac-Man in 1980 • Soon Williams released Defender and Nintendo made Donkey Kong 2 3 Early Stages of Competition 4
In 1989 serious video games emerged for IBM’s PC computers • These were rivaled in the market when Nintendo launched Super Mario 3 in 1990. • By 1993 Sega and Nintendo were in control of 80 percent of the market. • That changed in 1995 when Sony released PlayStation. • The Nintendo 64 was released in 1996 and was a massive hit. The Early to Middle Stages of Competition
The first massive three competitors in the video game industry were • Gamecube– Nintendo • PlayStation & PlayStation 2 • Xbox – Microsoft • Each of these companies continued to compete and developed • Ninendo Wii • PlayStation 3 • Xbox 360 The Later Stages of Competition 5
Now the main two competitors in video games have been narrowed down to. • Play Station 4 • Xbox 1 • The reason Nintendo no longer really can compete with them is because of the online gaming capabilities that these two systems have. • They are also targeted to a older and more prominent age group. The Modern Stages of Competition
The High Score- Everyone wants to be the best and unlike a lot of things video games are unique because its easy to believe you can beat the high score. • Beating the Game- Designers build the game so that you feel accomplished when you level up or gain experience. • Role-Playing- So many people have the dream to be on a professional sports team but only so few can actually accomplish that. • Discovering- The designers of World of Warcraft built it so that it’s nearly impossible to explore everywhere on the map and conquer all the quests • Relationships- So many people love the camaraderie that comes when two people share a love for the same game and can play it together. Five Factors of why Video Games are Addictive
As video game designers analyze which games have had success and which have not they have found that games that fit into the mold of these five reasons are the most successful games. • It is astonishing how much the market for computer games has exploded and as more and more designers study what works the market will only grow.
