How do we measure Teen Pregnancy? The combination of: • Live Births, • Induced Abortions, or • Fetal Deaths to a Female under Age 20
Definitions: Pregnancy Rate: pregnancies per 1,000 females, aged 15-19 Fertility Rate: live births per 1,000 females, aged 15-19 Abortion Rate: abortions per 1,000 females, aged 15-19
About two in ten Montana girls will get pregnant at least once before they are 20.
The age when Montana teens become pregnant has varied slightly over time ….
And the outcome of teen pregnancies has changed to slightly...
…since 1981, pregnancy rates for Montana teens have declined 33% 75.5 74.4 50.3
Further, pregnancy rates have declined for each teen age group in Montana Pregnancy Rates fell 34% for 18-19 year olds Pregnancy Rates fell 25% for 15-17 year olds

Out of Wedlock births • In 1981, 47% of Montana teen births were to unmarried teens.

This trend reflects: • A decline in marriage after pregnancy - “shotgun marriage” • Increased acceptance of non-marital childbearing in general • Teens mirroring behavior of adults
Out of wedlock births have increased for both teens and adults in Montana
Teen Sexual Activity • Teens’ report of having sex increases with each grade in Montana (1999). • By 9th grade about three in ten (29%) • By 12th grade about three in five (58%) • Sexual activity has decreased in 1990’s • In 1999, less than half (43%) of Montana high school teens reported that they have ever had sex (US - 48%)
Native American Teens • Native Americans make up a 6% of the population with seven reservations • Approximately 10% of the Native American population are teens aged 15-19
Nearly five in ten Native American teens in Montana will become pregnant by age 20.
Slightly more than half of pregnant Native American teens are 18 -19(Montana 1981-2000)
Most Native American teen mothers are unmarried(Montana 1981-2000)

What puts teens at risk? • Poverty • Physical and sexual abuse • Having a prior pregnancy • Substance use • Dating an older partner
