  9. How do you avoid plagiarism? Learn to document correctly. Be thorough and complete in your note taking and documentation.
  10. Writing Responsibly There are two share a source’s information - Quote directly Paraphrase Paraphrasing information is preferable to directly quoting. Paraphrase - using your own words to restate what other people have written To properly paraphrase, following these 6 steps: Skim the selection for overall meaning Carefully read the selection List the main ideas on a piece of paper Review the selection one more time Write your paraphrase Check your summary
  11. Writing Responsibly To avoid plagiarism- Indicate clearly when you use anything from another writer’s work, even if only a phrase or single word, by using quotation marks. When summarizing or paraphrasing, distinguish clearly where the ideas of others end and your own comments begin. When using a writer’s idea, credit the author by name and also cite the work in which you found the idea. Provide a new citation when using additional information from a previously cited work. Err on the side of caution by giving credit whenever you suspect you are using information, other than general knowledge, from a source.

  15. Recording Crucial Information on Bibliography/ Source Cards
  16. Follow these steps for making bibliography cards: Get a source and skim it to see if it is useful. If the source is helpful, complete a source card for that source. Complete a bibliography card before taking notes from that source.
  17. Book Bibliography Card Each bib card from abook sourcemust have the following information on it depending on the source type. Source # Author of article (Look for him/her after article title AND at the end of the article) “Article title” Title of book Author or Editor of the book City of Publication Publishing Company Date of Publication Page numbers of article Call number Library

(Remember that some Print publications have Web publications with slightly different names. They may, for example, include the additional information or otherwise modified information, like domain names [e.g. .com or net].) Any version numbers available, including revisions, posting dates, volumes, or issue numbers. Publisher information, including the publisher name and publishing date. Take note of any page numbers (if available). Date you accessed the material. Complete URL.

  26. Computer/Online Sources Printcomplete copies of ALLnon-Discus computer sources from which you take notes. These copies MUSTbe turned in with your note cards andfinal paper. I should be able to locate ALLof the crucial source information on your copies. Do not simply copy and paste the text to Word. You must print directly from the website! Each copy should be numberedto correspond with your source cards. Computer sources must have a bibliography card.
  27. Computer/Online Sources What is a viable source? Wikipedia or other encyclopedia sites will NOT be accepted! You MUST use databases provided Discus and prove to me you have exhausted all resources before I will allow you to do a “Google” search!

Note Cards: Taking Notes Note cards must have four things: Source number Page number of actual note Heading (Background, Data 1, Data 2, Data 3, Counterclaim, Rebuttal) Information Should be mostly paraphrases If quoting use quotation marks Stay between 2 and 5 lines of card Do not go to the back of the card ONE IDEA per card.
