What made us to study AIDS Awareness among truckers • Migrant population and mobile population (drivers) are very vulnerable to HIV infections and has been found to be the key factor in spreading the disease in India. The main reasons are : • Mobile nature of their profession • Mobility away from their family and community • High risk of their exposure and clientele to sex workers Lokmanya Medical Foundation
OBJECTIVE • To assess knowledge level and attitude of heavy vehicle drivers on HIV / AIDS. Lokmanya Medical Foundation
Methods of Study • 815 (41%) Truck Drivers were selected randomly out of the 2000 Truck Drivers prior to under-going the training and health education programme • Structured questionnaire was used for collecting data • statistical analysis was done by using SPSS-12 Lokmanya Medical Foundation
KNOWLEDGE & ATTITUDE REGARDING TRANSMISSION OF HIV Lokmanya Medical Foundation
Prevention through Condom • 49%) misunderstood that condom provides full protection against HIV infection. • There were 53 subjects who felt sexual intercourse do not transmit AIDS. • The most ironical finding was that 62% truckers did not know how to use condoms or have not used it so far Lokmanya Medical Foundation
ASSESSMENT OF KNOWLEDGE LEVEL OF TRUCK DRIVERS • Out of the total 815 truck drivers 39.75% are aware of the causative factors of AIDS. • 47.07% General Awareness and Precautions • 27.02% Signs and symptoms of AIDS scored lowest score Lokmanya Medical Foundation
Knowledge about HIV/AIDS • 57.42% have very poor knowledge, • 42% have average knowledge • 0.5% drivers had good knowledge about AIDS. Lokmanya Medical Foundation
Conclusion • This study projects that there is more need for inputs to raise their awareness level. • The gap between knowledge and practice should be narrowed with rich knowledge. Lokmanya Medical Foundation
