Hammurabi’s Code One of the earliest surviving set of written laws originated by the Babylonians. • Ancient Mesopotamia A region in and around the Tigris-Euphrates river system in which some of the earliest known civilizations formed. It includes Sumer, Assyria, and Babylonia. • City-State A self-governing central city and its surrounding villages who collectively follow a similar way of life. Vocabulary
