  1. Bellwork January 31, 2014 • Yesterday we learned about North Africa and the liberation of Rome from German forces. • During that time who, which two countries, were involved in major fighting in Europe?

  2. The Eastern Front • Germans invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941 • September 1941- Germans surrounded Leningrad and began a siege • What do you think is a siege? Think about it for 30 seconds, and then share your thoughts with your partner.

  3. Siege of Leningrad • A siege is a military blockade • Lasted almost 900 days • Germans continued to attack • Food ran low • Dogs • Cats • Horses • And made bread from wallpaper paste • Germans could not take the city and the siege was broken in 1944

  4. Other Soviet Union cities • 1941- Germans tried to capture the capital Moscow • Fighting against heavy losses and bad weather the Germans reached the outskirts by December • Soviets staged a counterattack and the German forces retreated

Stalingrad • Spring 1942- Germans launched attacks on Stalingrad • In order to take the city the Germans needed to fight street by street, house by house • Germans won Stalingrad • Soviet force surrounded the city and cut off supplies • Starving the Germans fought until February 1943 and finally surrendered • Stalingrad is one of the bloodiest battles in the history of war

  6. Stalingrad • After Stalingrad the Soviet offensive drove the Germans back hundreds of miles • Germans tried to mount a counteroffensive in the summer of 1943 • Stalingrad was a major turning point in the war
