What is a Combustion Reaction? A Combustion Reaction – is when an element or a compound reacts with oxygen, often producing energy in the form of heat and light. For example: You may have a heater that burns natural gas, propane, or heating oil in order to heat your house.

The main Phases of the Combustion reaction: Pre-ignition: the heat absorbing phase, where heat is added to fuel, resulting in vaporization of water and other substances. This provides the gases that make the flames in the next phase of combustion ꜜ Flaming Combustion: The most efficient phase of combustion, where the heat is released. Produces the least amount of smoke per unit of fuel that is consumed. Smoldering Combustion: This is the least efficient phase of combustion and produces the most smoke. Glowing Combustion: The phase where only embers are visible, there is no longer energy to create visible smoke.

Complete and Incomplete Combustions Combustion is a reaction that needs oxygen. The amount of oxygen present during the reaction can change the whole reaction and what it produces. If there is not enough oxygen available during the reaction, combustion will be incomplete. This could also produce Carbon, and toxic Carbon Monoxide. This is the more common of the two. Complete Combustion is when a combustion reaction has enough oxygen available to completely combust. Complete combustion of a Hydrocarbon produces Carbon Dioxide and water. This releases a lot of energy as heat.
Spontaneous Combustion Spontaneous Combustion- A combustion that occurs without an external ignition source. Spontaneous Human Combustion- This is a phenomenon in which a human body purportedly catches fire as a result of heat generated internally by some type of chemical reaction. Hundreds of years ago people believed that if a person drank to much brandy or possessed to much anger, he or she might burn into death internally.
