What is the Electoral College? • A system that provides for indirect election of the Executive Branch • Electors are representatives chosen by states to vote • Each state gets as many electors as it has senators and representatives • PA has 20 electoral votes, so how many senators and reps? • They vote for President
Why do we have the Electoral College? • Originally to allow for the educated to vote for the Executive • Supposed to safe guard against a unqualified candidate • Why would this be so in 1790?
How the College Works! • Electors chosen by state legislatives • Vote Monday after Second Wednesday in December • Typically a rubber stamp vote (winner take all in each state except ME and NE)
Electoral College Dates • Nov 8 Election Day • Mid Nov through Dec 19 • Jan 6 – Official Counting of Electoral Votes • Jan 20 – Inauguration Day
Drawbacks of the College • Can win popular election but lose electoral college (5x in US history) • People are more informed today, no need for a safe guard
Why the EC is good • Winner take all method forces parties to campaign to all the people • Campaigns have to be more diverse and try to include as many people as possible • Encourages a two party system
Why the EC is bad. • Win the popular vote but lose the election • Depresses voter turnout • Winner take all despite possible close turnout • Electoral college voters can still vote as they please
