THE STORY • Smith High School has always had a problem with cliques. Physical fights, verbal abuse, and damage to personal property has become the norm. School staff is trying to mitigate the problem with suspensions and mediations, but nothing they do seems to help. Recently, a student at SHS lost their life to this violence, and that is why they have decided to enact a Connect for Respect program at their school.
THE GOAL • We will bring the students closer together so that they can learn to understand each others’ lives in order to increase empathy and decrease bullying at Smith High School.
THE TEAM • Parents • Counselors • School administration • Concerned community members • At least one representative from each student club/organization
THE TIMES • In school assemblies every other week • Parent/Community nights once a month • Meetings will continue at this frequency until the problem is solved, and then they will be reduced to every other month and once a quarter respectively
THE SOLUTIONS • Over the summer, find a good anti-bullying speaker to come in and talk to the students about their clique problem. Set up his/her visit for the start of the school year, so that you can set the tone for a new school year.
THE SOLUTIONS (CON’T) • About a week after the speaker comes in, select one school day to do teambuilding exercises. Break the students into random groups, and teach them how to work together to accomplish goals and solve problems.
THE SOLUTIONS (CON’T) • Have students design and create a mural in the cafeteria. Finalize the design by winter break, and finish the mural by spring break. The school will hold at least two after school sessions per week, when the students can come to work on their section of the mural.
