  3. SITUATION • It is often the case that desks become cluttered with many pens. • This makes the desk untidy and difficult to work on especially if you are a ‘Product Designer’ and you use felt pens of all different shapes and sizes. • It would be better if pens could be found easily and do not lay under the design work. Task 3: Pen Holder WHS Technology Department

  4. BRIEF • I will design and make a ‘Pen Holder’. The product will be eye catching and appeal to all ages. • The product will be made mainly from metal. • The product will be able to hold multiple pens of different shapes and sizes. Task 3: Pen Holder WHS Technology Department

  5. SPECIFICATION Function/Performance • Must hold many pens • Must hold pens of different shapes and sizes • The pens must be easily placed and removed from the product Materials • Must be made mostly from METAL • Must be made of at least two parts joined mechanically • Must be recyclable • Must be inexpensive Aesthetics • Must be good to look at • Materials to be used must add quality and decoration Production Processes/Manufacturing • Must be made accurately and be well finished • Must be made using the correct metal working techniques Safety • Must be safe for all especially young children • Must be robust (should not fall apart or have small fiddly bits) • Must be stable when full of pens Task 3: Pen Holder WHS Technology Department

  8. MATERIALS Example Page INFORMATION SHEETon METALS This Information can be found By following the link below. You will have to scroll through the document but there is an index. This document is very useful for the whole of the Design and Manufacture course. (Will only work in School – however it is available on the Technical Wiki site) Link below if the above does not work. P:\Coursework\Read-Only\SENIORS\Technicial\Higher Product Design\Unit 3 Also look at the book: Success Guide-’Craft and Design’ Metals Pg.30. 11. Activity 1 Design Outcome(T3A1D(1)5,6(2)1) This is the Firstactivity for this you need to produce: • a range of ideas for the ‘Pen Holder’ ALSO • You must consider what components will be required • You can produce your ideas on more than one sheet SHOW ON THE LAST INITIAL IDEAS SHEET YOUR ‘FINAL IDEA’ IMPORTANT The ‘Pen Holder’must be made of no less than two parts (one must be made in metal) and include some form of jointing used in metal work. The sheet following gives some examples of an Initial Ideas Sheet (not for the ‘Pen Holder’!) Also look at the book: Success Guide – Craft and Design ‘Image Boards and Initial Ideas’ Pages 18-19 Task 3: Pen Holder WHS Technology Department

  12. Initial Ideas Sheets Shapes quickly drawn and colour rendered with annotation Shapes quickly drawn with no annotation and no colour Task 3: Pen Holder WHS Technology Department

  13. What is Annotation Task 3: Pen Holder WHS Technology Department

  14. Activity 2 (T3A2D(2)1,2) • This is the Secondactivity for this product. • In this activity you must: • Illustrate your sketches to show design details, including how the ‘pen holder’will be assembled (put together) • Think about the information that has to be communicated and the best way to show it (annotate your drawings) IMPORTANT This task will require you to communicate information on the materials that you are using such as sizes, properties, cost, manufacturing colours and anything else you think is relevant. ‘You may have to use more than one sheet’ Success Guide – ‘Craft and Design’ Developing Ideas pages 20-21 Task 3: Pen Holder WHS Technology Department

  15. Manufacturing: Drawings Showing Products and their Parts Roof Assembly Garden Insect Repellant device Parts of a Shoe and how they fit together Exploded Isometric Assembly Task 3: Pen Holder WHS Technology Department

  16. Manufacturing: FINAL IDEA DETAIL Task 3: Pen Holder WHS Technology Department

  17. WORKING DRAWING Task 3: Pen Holder WHS Technology Department

  18. Activity 3(T3A3D(2)1,2) • This is the Third activity. In this activity you will: • Create a model to support your design thinking and decisions • Think about what materials are best suited to manufacture the model so that it will closely resemble your design • Write an Evaluation of the model to say how well the model works (see sheet after Model Making) In this activity make your model full size, remember you are trying to evaluate your design by modelling a physical representation of it. Task 3: Pen Holder WHS Technology Department

  19. MODEL MAKINGhttp://www.technologystudent.com/prddes1/model1.html TO MAKE A MODEL YOU CAN USE ALL SORTS OF MATERIALS. THE MATERIALS CHOSEN SHOULD BE SIMILAR TO THE PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIAL YOU WILL MAKE THE PROTOTYPE FROM. THE DIMENSIONS OF THE MODEL SHOULD NOT BE ‘MADE TO SCALE’ UNLESS THE FINAL PROTOTYPE IS VERY LARGE. IN THESE EXAMPLES THE CHAIR IS MADE TO SCALE BUT THE SHAVER IS FULL SIZE. 21. Activity 4(T3A4(2)3,4) • This is theFourthactivity. In this activity you will: • Produce manufacturing plans which incorporate requirements for tools, equipment, materials and fixings, as well as manufacturing techniques and processes. Using what you have learnt and thought about while making your model of the ‘pen holder’produce a ‘Method of Manufacture’ sheet for the making of the final prototype - look here for information • http://www.technologystudent.com/designpro/quality1.htm • Success Guide – ‘Craft and Design’ Planning for Manufacture pages 22-23 Task 3: Pen Holder WHS Technology Department
