Some Definitions Ionization energy: The energy required to pull an electron from an atom Electronegativity: The desire an atom has for an electron Atomic Radius: Size of the neutral element’s atom Ionic Radius: Size of the ion’s atom.
Atomic Radius Decreases as you go to the right and increases as you go down the periodic table. Going down in a group makes sense. You’re adding an entire energy level. When going to the right, you are filling the same energy level with more and more electrons. At the same time, the nucleus of each element's atoms has one more proton as you go across in order. The fact that there is one more electron and one more proton increases the amount of charge pulling on each other and thus actually shrinks the size of the cloud rather than enlarges it as you might want to think.
Ionic Radius • Increases as you go to the right and down the periodic table • If the atom gains electrons (nonmetals), the radius gets bigger. • If the atom loses electrons (metals) the radius gets smaller.
Ionization Energy Increases as you go to the right and up the periodic table.
Electronegativity Increases as you go to the right and up the periodic table.
Metals are generous! They like to give away electrons so they have low EN and IE. • Non-metals are greedy! They want more electrons and have high EN and IE.
