  1. Catastrophic Events Mixbook Project Amy Smith ETEC 562 August 8, 2013

  2. Audience and Objective This lesson was prepared for seventh grade science students and focuses on TEK 7.8A: Students will be given 7 days in class and 4 additional days outside of class to complete their projects. After the projects are complete, 2-3 days will be required for group presentations in class. Students are expected to predict and describe how different types of catastrophic events impact ecosystems such as floods, hurricanes, or tornadoes.

  3. Learning Theory Students will be working in a constructivist learning environment collaborating to create an artifact that will be shared and discussed with the class. Students will be working in groups so that they can learn to work together and learn from each other. They will also be collaborating with and learning from members of the community. The end product will be an online digital book that will be shared and discussed which follows along with Papert’s belief that artifacts can provide an anchor for understanding among a group of people.

  4. Technology Components Research: Students will be using provided websites and online databases to research catastrophic events. They will also be contacting community agencies via email or telephone. Drafts: Students will be creating a first draft of the information that will be in their final project using Microsoft Word. Final Project: Students will be creating a digital book using the online tool Mixbook.

  5. Catastrophic Events Project For the next few weeks we will be studying catastrophic events (or natural disasters) and their effects on ecosystems. You will be working in groups and your final product will be a digital book about catastrophic events and your community. Research Collaborate Draft Mixbook

  6. Learning Objectives • While working on this project you will be… • Learning about catastrophic events worldwide. • Learning to research using websites and online encyclopedias. • Learning to collaborate with your peers and the community. • Learning about the effect catastrophic events have on ecosystems. • Learning about catastrophic events in your area. • Learning about community agencies and preparation for catastrophic events. • Learning to create a Mixbook.

  7. Student Instructions • With your group make a list of natural disasters/catastrophic events. • Determine which natural disaster is most likely to occur where you live. • Each group member will research a natural disaster - including the one you decided on in step 2 - find photos and write about it. (We will be going to the computer lab, library, or using the COWs.) The first draft will be done in Word and when all group members are finished you will work together to create a Mixbook about what you have learned. Make sure you include the following information on your pages: • causes • regions where the disasters are most likely to occur • effects on the ecosystem • Using the natural disaster you decided on in step 2, work together and contact local agencies to answer the following questions on the last five pages of your Mixbook: • What is the biggest natural disaster concern where you live? • Imagine you were caught in the disaster and a newspaper reporter is interviewing you. What would you say to the reporter? What would your quote be in the newspaper? • What would be the effects on the ecosystem? • What structures, agencies and policies are in place to help the community if the disaster occurs? • What are some things your city could do to improve preparation before and assistance after the disaster occurs?
