How have the employment laws in the UK changed over the years? • 1601 – Elizabethan Poor Law • Money was raised by putting a tax on land and buildings. • It provided ‘outdoor relief’ through workhouses • ‘Indoor relief’ was available by providing food and clothing to those at home.
How did the employment laws in the UK change in the 20th Century? • National Minimum Wage Act 1998 - £6.08 per hour – 28 days paid holiday per year. • Working Time Regulations 1998 – right to leave for child care, 20 minutes break every 6 hour shift • Equalities Act 2010 – ensures people are judged by the content of their character not their gender, sexual orientation, race, beliefs, disability or age.
