The story begins during the hot summer of 1885… Emile GIFFARD was at the time a dispensing pharmacist in the town of Angers in the Loire Valley, France . As Inventive, curious gourmet, Emile undertook research on the digestive and refreshing properties of the local mint. Through his studies he created a pure, clear and refined white mint liqueur which he served to the customers for the local Grand Hotel in order to offer them some relief from the heat and Giffard became an instant success. Emile later changed his pharmacy business into a working distillery and named his creation « Menthe Pastille » which referred to the popular mint candy of the time.Four generations later Giffard still remains under family control and maintains the original quality standards that Emile set all those years ago.
