Indian History Pre 20thC. In about 200 the Laws of Manu defined the four Hindu castes From 280-750 the Gupta Dynasty ruled, often called the “Golden Age” of India Chola empire ruled 753-1190 Mongols ruled 1206-1490 In 1526 the Mughal empire begins, unifying much of India for the first time Holland, Great Brittan, and France establish trading posts in India in 1600 Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan built the TajMahal in memorial of his wife in 1638 In 1858 British overthrew the Mughals and took control of India
India in the 20th Century • The Indian National Congress was founded in 1885 and fought to dislodge the British from the subcontinent. • The Civil Disobedience movement, which was led by Mahatma Gandhi in 1930, played a huge part in getting India it’s sovereignty. • After many years of protesting, India gained it’s independence in 1947. • Throughout the remaining years of the 20th century, India’s policies became more and more inspired by socialism.
India’s Statehood and Borders • Almost all of India was under Britain’s control • Agriculturally and industrially India prospered under Britain’s rule railroads created, trade increase • European attacks on Islamic countries began to undermine Muslim allegiance to Britain talk of Muslim state • A tentative line was drawn indicating Islamic area (Pakistan) disputes erupted over Kashmir • British withdrew in 1947 • India and Pakistan became two separate independent democratic nations
Evolution of Government January 26, 1950- India became a republic, honored the declaration of independence Local self government played important role in independence movement Is now a union government, central government
India’s Foreign Policy • One of the founding members of both the League of Nations and the United Nations • Has supported several other countries struggling for independence, such as Indonesia and Burma • Has had a strong military relationship with Russia since the Cold War • Relations with China: Generally distrustful of each other Sino-Indian war in 1962 Border disputes over Aksai Chin and Arunachal Pradesh Relations have greatly improved since 1988
