Historic Events • The Cold War • The Vietnam War • The Space Race • The Nuclear Arms Race
Cold War • USA and USSR • Fighting against and for the spread of communism • Caused many economic descreases • Relates: either country was determined to gain upper hand.
Vietnam War • USA involved in Vietnam conflict. • 1962-1973 • A part of the Cold War. • Gave the USA a chance to test out many bombs
Space Race • A competition between the USA and USSR • Who could attain firsts in space exploration? • From 1957-1975 • Relates: directly influenced the treaty, both the USA and USSR were in space.
Participants Compliance • Every nation that signed the treat was forced to comply with the following: • the exploration and use of outer space shall be carried out for the benefit and in the interests of all countries and shall be the province of all mankind; • outer space shall be free for exploration and use by all States; • outer space is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means; • States shall not place nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in orbit or on celestial bodies or station them in outer space in any other manner; • the Moon and other celestial bodies shall be used exclusively for peaceful purposes; • astronauts shall be regarded as the envoys of mankind; • States shall be responsible for national space activities whether carried out by governmental or non-governmental entities; • States shall be liable for damage caused by their space objects; and • States shall avoid harmful contamination of space and celestial bodies.
Legal Loopholes • Only states Countries as a whole are not allowed own pieces of the moon or other celestial bodies. • Nothing is stated about individuals owning pieces of the moon or other celestial bodies.
Implementation challenges • Very Vague • USSR vs. USA • Too futuristic • Not main priority for some countries (especially LEDC’S)
