What is Research? More than you know!
EPCC’s IRB needs your attention • The Institution Review Board is charged with insuring that ALL research done at/by EPCC conforms to standards set to protect human subjects.
What constitutes research with Human Subjects? • Using humans (students too) to answer questions posed. • This includes surveys used by faculty/staff in the classroom. • This includes surveys done by students outside the classroom. • Obvious to many, this includes experimentation done using students, and others.
What to do if you are doing research: • Contact the IRB to apply for clearance to conduct your research. • Obtain an application form. • Complete the brief form. • Return the form to the IRB. • WAIT for clearance (most clearance is given quickly)
How do you contact the IRB? • Visit the College web-page. • Contact the Office of the VP of Research and Development (Mr. Saul Candelas: SaulC@epcc.edu). • Contact IRB Chair (Keith Pannell: Keithpa@epcc.edu).
Why? • We must maintain ethical, moral, and legal guidelines for any/all research done under the umbrella of EPCC. • Federal funding (Pell Grants, etc.) may be jeopardized when researchers are unaware of the boundaries involved with human subjects. • Federal Law protects “Human Subjects”.
Brought to you by your friendly IRB. Thank You.
