  1. Power Words 1 • These words have been shown to show up often in two places • In everyday reading • On tests like the SAT • Knowing these words will greatly improve your reading comprehension and your test scores.

  2. illicit (ill-LISS-it) (adj) forbidden; not permitted -Alex Rodriguez was suspended from baseball for taking illicit drugs.

  3. Candor (CAN-der) (n) honesty, openness -Sometimes too much candor can be a bad thing.

  4. Aberration (a-ber-AY-shun) (n) something that is out of the ordinary -We lost Chuck last night. Let’s hope that’s an aberration.

  5. Egregious (uh-GREE-juss) (adj) extremely bad-Judges giving the rubber chicken to Ferris was an egregious error.

  6. fickle (adj) changing frequently -She was so fickle she broke up with me on Friday, asked to go out again on Saturday, and broke up with me again on Sunday!

  7. Gratuitous (gra-TOO-it-us) (adj) excessive; unnecessary -I don’t mind a few cuss words, but the cursing in The Wolf of Wall Street was gratuitous.

  8. Berate (bee-RATE) (v) to yell at forcefully-The coach berated the disrespectful player in front of the crowd.

  9. Hallowed (HAL-owed) (adj) respected; holy-Turkey and gravy is a hallowed American tradition

  10. Lucid (LOOSE-id) (adj) clear, easily understandable -The teacher’s lucid explanation of the math problem helped me ace the test.

  11. Daunting (DONT-ing) (adj) difficult; intimidating -The road to winning the Super Bowl is daunting.

  12. Now, write ten sentences using each word. • Underline the word. • Make sure the sentence shows you know the meaning • BAD=The drive to school was daunting. • GOOD=The drive to school was daunting because of the icy roads.
