Bleeding Kansas • The term “Bleeding Kansas” was used by newspapers to describe the violence (200 dead, $2 million in property damage • 1st battleground between those for slavery and those who opposed it • Border ruffians: armed Missourians who voted illegally in Kansas to help elect a pro-slavery legislature
John Brown & the Raid on Harpers Ferry Fervent abolitionist who led the raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry. He hoped by arming slaves, he could lead an insurrection against slaveholders.
