Support Gaza drivers The ITF project
Life in Gaza “It is hard to describe life in Gaza. For six years 1.6 million people have been living under blockade in violation of international law. They have suffered from periodic air and missile attacks as a result of exchanges between Hamas and the Israeli armed forces. The blockade has devastated Gaza’s economy, restricted freedom of movement, and threatened all basic services. There is currently a severe crisis in fuel supplies, medical services, water supply and waste management” ITF assistant general secretary, Stuart Howard
Unions in Gaza • Workers in Gaza have been traditionally well organised. • The ITF’s Gaza Bus Drivers Union organised 2000 bus, taxi & ambulance drivers until 2007. • 2007 union office requisitioned - and later destroyed in an Israeli air attack • Urgent support to rebuild this union is needed.
Background • 2008 – 2013: ITF’s Canadian affiliate CAW supported projects that developed a hotline to assist drivers passing through Israeli military checkpoints in the West Bank • From 2011, organised truck drivers via the Palestinian Drivers’ Assistance project. • During the 2008 Israeli air assault on Gaza, the ITF organised a unique humanitarian relief effort enabling medical supplies to enter by air and road. • In November 2012, the ITF helped facilitate an ITUC mission to Gaza; an ITF mission is being scheduled for late 2013
Will you join? • The ITF is launching a Solidarity Fund aimed to raise funds to be used to set up a transport union office in Gaza, support union training and organise Gaza taxi drivers. • Link to campaign page www.itfgazafund.org
