  1. Who do Sikhs worship?

  2. Learning objective – to be able to identify the key characteristics of the God that Sikhs worship. I can explain the different ways God is represented in Sikhism. Level 5 I can apply my knowledge in different ways to show my understanding of God in Sikhism. Level 6 I can describe the different features of the God that Sikhs worship. Level 3

  3. Starter – in pairs or threes, write down in a mind map all the things you know about Sikhism.

  4. What is God called in Sikhism? God has many names in Sikhism but the most popular is called – Waheguru, which means ‘Wondrous Enlightener’ - he is the bringer of light and removes spiritual darkness.

  5. What is the MoolMantar? The MoolMantaris the opening prayer in the Guru Granth Sahib, which contains the Sikh scriptures. This prayer contains the essence and describes God. Sikhs recite this prayer at least once a day. Moolmeans origin Mantar means mantra – something which is repeated over and over again.

  6. How many Gods are there in Sikhism? There is one God according to Sikhs and is neither male or female. God can be known by many names, including those from other religions. This is represented by the symbol called IkOnkar, which means unity of God – God is one. This idea of one God is central to Sikh beliefs and is defined in the opening line of the MoolMantar.

  7. What is naam in Sikhism? Sikhs believe in the importance of Naam – this is the idea that God is present in all living things. This means that – • All things are connected. • It does not matter which religion you belong to. • All people are equal. • All people should respect each other. • All people should value family life. • All people should be aware that God is everywhere and not attach themselves to worldly possessions.
